Background
The UNESCO chair in ‘Societal Climate Change Research and Resilience’ at the University of Hamburg seeks to promote an integrated system for dealing with the impacts of climate change on small islands and enhance local resilience through ways of exploring, transferring and disseminating different forms of interdisciplinary knowledge production. Climate change is one of the most urgent global threats, and to counter the current deficit of action, activating approaches are called for that generate new practices and empower local communities in the process. Against this background, the chair focuses on co-production of readily applicable knowledge in living geography labs, support reciprocal learning across islands in different cultural regions in the global South and North and build effective cooperation through targeted networking between natural scientists on coastal climate change impact and island scholars.
The position is designed to support the UNESCO chair’s objectives and engagement in community engagement and communication and enables further qualification in thematically related fields.
Your responsibilities
Duties primarily include the support of the UNESCO chair’s objective and research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.
- self-responsible managing the interdisciplinary collaboration network of small island scholars and natural scientists bridging state of the art climate change impact knowledge with resilience challenges on small islands
- exploring new ways of training, teaching and disseminating climate change action at the local (community) level
- developing and implementing approaches to critically monitor the activating approaches chosen, the co-production of knowledge in different island contexts as well as evaluating and optimising transfer activities in local climate change action and resilience enhancement
- integrating the UNESCO chair’s work in the Centre of Excellence CLICCS at the University of Hamburg
- publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and presentation at scientific conferences
Your profile
A university degree in a relevant field, preferably Geography, Environmental, Coastal or Water Management and Engineering.
- experience in self-responsible and independent research in the interdisciplinary field of societal climate change adaptation, assessments of vulnerability impacts and risk resilience in small islands or coastal zones
- very good oral and written communication skills in English and German
- experience and good organisational skills
- good teamwork abilities and networking
- willingness to independently and self-responsible support the chair holder in her UNESCO networking work and engagement
Additional skills and knowledge
- experience in small island studies and in climate change adaptation processes
- experience in organising and managing workshops, scientific meetings and conferences
- experiences in developing innovative educational material and course syllabus
- experiences in scientific publications and editing academic and/or non-academic literature
