GfE Talk: Drowning Deltas and Sinking Cities. Why do they sink and what can we do about it?

24th October 2024, 18:00 to 19:00
Dr. Philip S. J. Minderhoud Assistant Professor
Wageningen University & Research

Worldwide river deltas and coastal cities are sinking at rates far exceeding sea-level rise, exacerbating flood exposure, damaging infrastructure, and enhancing salinization. This hidden assassin threatens valuable ecosystems, vital food production and over half a billion people living in sinking deltas. We will explore different coastal cities and deltas worldwide and unravel why they sink. We will discuss ways of mitigation and options to address the wicked challenge of the sinking coasts to safeguard our coastal communities.
