The Research Unit of Higher Geodesy of the Department of Geodesy and Geoinformation at TU Wien is seeking a motivated project assistant (any gender) to work as a
Researcher in GNSS-Reflectometry Vegetation Mapping (Pre-doc / Post-doc)
for a 30h/week employment.
Research objectives:
The successful candidate will investigate how GNSS-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) data, particularly from the CYGNSS mission, can complement and enhance Sentinel-2–based optical Leaf Area Index (LAI) retrieval. The project will also evaluate the potential of the HydroGNSS mission, including its dual-polarization capability and the use of Galileo signals for vegetation mapping.
Key responsibilities:
- Develop and implement AI-based methods for LAI retrieval using GNSS-R and auxiliary data
- Perform comparative analyses between optical, GNSS-R, and fused data products
- Maintain an open-access Python toolbox for GNSS-R vegetation monitoring
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals and present findings at scientific conferences
- Contribute to the organization of a scientific workshop for Austrian and European stakeholders
Qualifications:
- PhD (for Post-doc) or MSc/Master’s degree (for Pre-doc) in Geodesy, Remote Sensing, Mathematics, Data Science, Environmental Sciences, or a related field
- Experience in research with satellite data (e.g., GNSS-R or similar EO datasets)
- Strong programming skills in Python or MATLAB and experience with scientific data processing
- Organizational and analytical skills, as well as a structured approach to work
- Interest and joy in research and working with students
- Team spirit and problem-solving skills
- Experience in project management is advantageous
- Good written and spoken communication skills in English or German

Remuneration is in accordance with the Collective Agreement for University Employees and is € 3.714,80 (Pre-doc) or € 4.932,90 (Post-doc) for a 40h/week employment. The monthly salary is paid 14 times per year. The extent of working hours per week can be negotiated. The contract will initially be limited to 1 year.
