„Loss and Damage – und wir?“ Vortrag und Diskussion mit Harjeet Singh am 10.6.2024 in der Versöhnungskirche Beuel
Anlässlich der „Bonn Climate Change Conference – June 2024“ organisiert der Arbeitskreis Internationale Zusammenarbeit des Deutschen Verbands für Angewandte Geographie am 10.6.24 um 18.30h in der Versöhnungskirche in Bonn-Beuel einen Diskussionsabend zum Thema “Loss and Damage”. Referent ist Harjeet Singh, Global Engagement Director der Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty und vormaliger Leiter der politischen Strategie bei CAN International, dem globalen Dachverband von Umwelt- und Entwicklungsinitiativen.
Unter „Loss and Damage“ versteht man die Verluste und Schäden, die durch die Klimakrise vor allem im globalen Süden entstehen. Auf dem letzten Klimagipfel wurde formal ein Fonds beschlossen, in den vor allem die Industrieländer als Hauptverursacher der Klimakrise Gelder zur Erstattung dieser Verluste und Schäden einzahlen sollen. Aktuell werden in UN-Gremien Kriterien für den Fonds aufgestellt, doch vieles ist noch im Unklaren, unter anderem die Transparenz des Vorgehens sowie Art und Umfang der Beteiligung der Zivilgesellschaft.
Darüber berichtet Harjeet Singh, der als Aktivist für globale Klimagerechtigkeit in die Debatten um „Loss and Damage“ und die Entstehung des Fonds von Anfang an beteiligt war. Er wird auch den Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty kurz vorstellen.
Ziel der Veranstaltung ist es, den Loss and Damage-Prozess verständlicher zu machen und zu zeigen, ob und was wir dazu beitragen können.
Herr Singh spricht auf Englisch; Fragen auf Deutsch werden ins Englische übersetzt.

“Loss and Damage – what does it mean for us?” Lecture and discussion with Harjeet Singh on 10th of June 2024 at ‚Versöhnungskirche‘ Beuel
On the occasion of the „Bonn Climate Change Conference – June 2024“, the Working Group on International Cooperation of the German Association for Applied Geography is organising a discussion evening on the topic of “Loss and Damage” on the 10th of June 2024 at 6.30pm in Bonn-Beuel. The speaker will be Harjeet Singh, Global Engagement Director of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty and former Head of Global Political Strategy at CAN International, the global umbrella organisation of environment and development initiatives.
„Loss and damage” means the losses and damages caused by the climate crisis, particularly in the Global South. At the last climate summit, a fund was formally initiated into which the industrialized countries as the main perpetrators of the climate crisis, are to provide funds for these losses and damages. Currently, UN bodies are establishing criteria for the fund working mechanisms, but much is still unclear, including the transparency of the distribution process and the nature and extent of civil society participation.
Harjeet Singh, who has been involved in the debates on “Loss and Damage” and the creation of the fund as an activist for global climate justice from the very beginning, reports on these processes. He will also briefly present the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.
The objective of the event is to make the loss and damage discussion more understandable and to show whether and how we can contribute to it by lobbying as a civil society. Mr Singh will speak in English; questions in German will be translated into English.
