The Chair of Geomorphology at the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg has a vacancy for a full-time position as
Akademische Rätin / Rat auf Zeit (m/f/d)
from 01.12.2025.
This is a temporary civil servant position (grade A13) for a period of three years, with the possibility of extension for a further three years. In principle, part-time employment is possible.
The role involves conducting research in the field of ‘Regional Geomorphology of Lower Franconia in the Context of Global and Regional Climate Change’ and realising a habilitation project. Ideally, the habilitation project will be carried out within the aforementioned subject area, but it can also cover another area of specialisation. The teaching obligation is 5 SWS. Preparing applications for third-party funding is also expected. An extension of the qualification position by three years to a total of six years to complete the habilitation will be granted upon successful acceptance as a habilitation candidate (m/f/d).
About us
The Chair of Geomorphology at the Institute of Geography and Geology at Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg investigates the impact of climatic changes and human influences on processes occurring on the Earth’s surface. Our research focuses in particular on the following areas: anthropogenic geomorphology, geomorphology and landscape reconstruction of arid areas, historical and recent fluvial morphodynamics and sedimentology of Central Europe, mass movements in Southern Europe, glacial and periglacial geomorphology. We have modern field and measuring equipment and a geomorphological-soil science laboratory at our disposal to carry out our research. In close collaboration with the group of climatology, we aim to further advance regional research into the interactions between prehistoric and future changes to the Earth’s surface and landscape, human activity, and climate change.

Your tasks
• Research work, acquisition of third-party funding in the context of the above-mentioned subject area
• Preparation and realisation of your own habilitation project
• Regular dissemination of research results (conferences, publications, etc.)
• Teaching courses at the Institute of Geography and Geology in the field of physical geography in the various Bachelor’s, Master’s and teacher training programmes
• Supporting the Chair’s projects in teaching and research (including workshops, conferences, research proposals, research projects)
• Academic self-administration tasks at the institute
Your profile
• Doctorate in physical geography, geosciences or related disciplines completed before taking up the position
• High level of interest and preferably research experience/expertise in the above-mentioned subject area
• Enthusiasm for research and willingness for interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaboration
• Proven expertise in the use of geographic information systems, the spatial/spatiotemporal analysis of geodata and geostatistics as research methods
• Basic knowledge of and affinity for one or more programming languages
• Willingness to organise and carry out field work
• Excellent verbal communication and scientific writing skills in English

Am Lehrstuhl für Geomorphologie der Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg ist zum 01.12.2025 eine Stelle in Vollzeit als
Akademische Rätin / Rat auf Zeit (m/w/d)
zu besetzen.
Die Einstellung erfolgt im Beamtenverhältnis auf Zeit (Bes.Gr. A 13) für die Dauer von drei Jahren mit der Möglichkeit der Verlängerung um weitere drei Jahre. Es besteht grundsätzlich die Möglichkeit der Teilzeitbeschäftigung.
Die Stelle dient zur Forschung im Themenfeld „Regionale Geomorphologie Unterfrankens im Spannungsfeld des globalen und regionalen Klimawandels“ und zur Durchführung eines Habilitationsprojektes. Bevorzugterweise wird das Habilitationsprojekt im Rahmen des o.g. Themenfelds durchgeführt, es kann aber auch einen anderen Schwerpunkt umfassen. Die Lehrverpflichtung beträgt 5 SWS. Die Erarbeitung von Drittmittelanträgen wird erwartet. Eine Verlängerung der Qualifikationsstelle um 3 Jahre auf insgesamt 6 Jahre zum Abschluss der Habilitation erfolgt bei erfolgreicher Annahme als Habilitandin bzw. Habilitand (m/w/d) und vorbehaltlich einer Mentoratsvereinbarung.
Über uns
Der Lehrstuhl für Geomorphologie am Institut für Geographie und Geologie der Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg untersucht, wie sich klimatische Veränderungen und menschliche Einflüsse auf Prozesse an der Erdoberfläche auswirken. Unsere Forschung konzentriert sich insbesondere auf folgende Schwerpunkte: Anthropogene Geomorphologie, Geomorphologie und Landschaftsrekonstruktion arider Räume, historische und rezente Fluvialmorphodynamik sowie Sedimentologie Mitteleuropas, Massenbewegungen in Südeuropa, glaziale und periglaziale Geomorphologie. Zur Umsetzung unserer Forschung stehen uns moderne Feld- und Messgeräte sowie ein geomorphologisch-bodenkundliches Labor zur Verfügung. Insbesondere möchten wir in enger Kooperation mit dem Fachgebiet Klimatologie die regionale Untersuchung von Wechselwirkungen zwischen vorzeitlicher bis künftiger Erdoberflächen- und Landschaftsveränderung, menschlicher Aktivität und Klimawandel vorantreiben.

Ihre Aufgaben
• Forschungsarbeiten, Drittmitteleinwerbung im Rahmen des o.g. Themenfelds
• Ausarbeitung und Durchführung eines eigenen Habilitationsvorhabens
• Regelmäßige Präsentation von Forschungsergebnissen (Konferenzen im In- und Ausland, Publikationen, etc.)
• Durchführung von Lehrveranstaltungen am Institut für Geographie und Geologie im Bereich der Physischen Geographie in den verschiedenen Bachelor-, Master- und Lehramtsstudiengängen
• Unterstützung von Vorhaben des Lehrstuhls in Lehre und Forschung (u.a. Workshops, Tagungen, Forschungsanträge, Forschungsprojekte)
• Übernahme von Aufgaben der Akademischen Selbstverwaltung am Institut
Ihr Profil
• Vor Antritt der Stelle abgeschlossene Promotion in der Physischen Geographie, Geowissenschaften bzw. verwandten Fachbereichen
• Hohes Interesse und möglichst Forschungserfahrung/ -expertise im o.g. Themenfeld
• Begeisterung für die Forschung und Bereitschaft zur interdisziplinären und transdisziplinären Zusammenarbeit
• Nachgewiesene Expertise im Umgang mit Geographischen Informationssystemen, der räumlichen/raumzeitlichen Analyse von Geodaten sowie Geostatistik als Forschungsmethoden
• Grundlegende Kenntnisse in und Affinität zu einer oder mehreren Programmiersprachen
• Bereitschaft zur Organisation und Durchführung von Geländearbeiten
• Sehr gute verbale Kommunikations- sowie wissenschaftliche Schreibfähigkeiten in Englisch
