University of Augsburg: PhD position

PhD position “Stabilizing natural and managed land systems against climate disturbances and extreme events.”

The PhD position (fixed 3 years term) is available in the research group “Climate resilience of human-made ecosystems” in Germany (Prof. Dr. Katharina Waha). Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Buermann, head of chair for physical geography and climate sciences will support the PhD candidate as the co-supervisor. The PhD research is planned to be conducted on large geographic scales using quantitative data analysis and ecosystem models for the entire biosphere and agricultural systems.

The PhD candidate will receive formal and on-the-job training but it is helpful to have:

  • an interest (and possibly knowledge) in programming and working with large, also global geographical and climatological data sets,
  • an interest (and possibly experience) in processing spatial data with R or Python,
  • very good English skills, oral and in writing, including scientific writing,
  • demonstrated capacity for timely completion of a high-quality research thesis.

The Centre for Climate Resilience at the University of Augsburg was founded at the end of 2020. The research centre is dedicated to research and science communication in the field of climate resilience with an interdisciplinary approach. The aim is to develop scientific foundations and holistic and implementable strategies at regional, national and international level that demonstrate adaptations to the unavoidable consequences of climate change.
