We are looking for the following person to join the Institute of Integrated Natural Sciences, working group Physical Geography, as soon as possible:
Research assistant (PostDoc) (m/f/d)
The project “Palaeoenvironment of the Iranian Highlands” analyses sediment archives that provide information about the Holocene climate and environmental change of this region, which has been inhabited for a long time and is characterised by predominantly arid climatic conditions. The results will be discussed in collaboration with colleagues from other subject disciplines in order to draw conclusions about human-environment relationships in the Iranian highlands. The project is part of the “SPP-2176 The Iranian Highlands: Resilience and Integration in Pre-Modern Societies”. The employment is 100% full-time (currently 39 hours) and is temporary for three years. The temporary employment is based on the regulations of the Act on Temporary Employment Contracts in Academia (WissZeitVG).
Your tasks:
- independent organisation and implementation of field work lasting several weeks in West Asia to describe sediment profiles and take sediment samples, including by means of percussion core drills
- organisation of sample export to Germany
- carrying out granulometric, geochemical, spectrometric and rock magnetic laboratory analyses
- analysing and interpreting the results
- presentation of the work at national and international conferences
- preparation of scientific publications
What you bring with you:
These prerequisites are:
- a successfully completed university degree (with the exception of a Bachelor’s degree) in geography, geology or related subject and a completed PhD with a strong background in Quaternary Sciences
- experience in carrying out independent field work and quaternary scientific profile surveys suitability for physically demanding work in difficult climatic conditions
- willingness to cooperate and ability to work in a team in an international (and intercultural) working group
- previous knowledge of sediment proxies, soil science (palaeo-soils), geoarchaeology and geomorphology
- willingness to participate in cooperative academic research
- willingness to undergo continuous further education and training
- very good written and spoken English language skills, good German and Persian language skills are an advantage
- a category BE driving licence or equivalent
